A marvellous cocktail party

Any follower of RetroChick on Twitter will know that the second Marvellous Cocktail Party took place this weekend in Norwich and that it was truly marvellous.

I mean, what’s not to love about getting dressed up like a 1930s film star and sipping martinis?

Getting glammed up

After weeks of searching for dresses and hairstyles, I set about rolling up my hair in eager anticipation this Friday, and I wasn’t disappointed. With the Hot Bopping Girls handing out chocolate cigarettes, a crooner and a live band, it was the perfect night out. It was also rather sophisticated, with everyone dressed up to the nines, which I don’t think happens enough these days, it has to be said.

The music was fabulous too, with everything from Cole Porter and Gershwin to big band swing – I did feel every inch Ginger Rogers, even if my hair style had started to fall out by the end of the evening. In fact, that was when everyone started to relax, and the dancing began in earnest, which was great fun. It’s actually made me consider taking swing dance classes. I will have to look into dates and times soon!

The Chinese auction was good fun too, and although I didn’t win anything, it seemed more fair that your traditional raffle. With prizes including a gramophone, a vintage dress, a vanity case and a beautiful necklace, it was well worth putting some money in.

A perfect martini

The event was staged at Farmer Brown’s on Tombland, which isn’t somewhere I had ever been before, but with the great lighting and detailing in the rooms, it had an intimate atmosphere and felt a bit like a speak easy in some of the darker corners.

Speaking of which, the vodka martinis made by Farmer Brown’s bar staff were amazing. With a little twist of lemon in the bottom (you could have an olive) they were smooth and dry, just the way they’re supposed to be.

When I first bought the ticket for £20, I was apprehensive, but with two cocktails included in the price, it was actually very good value for money. To get in anywhere on a Friday night will cost you money and that’s without drinks or having such a good time!
