Fish and chips at French’s

Whenever anyone mentions going to Wells-next-the-Sea, it always elicits the same response from me: ‘ooh you should get fish and chips’.

Now, most discerning Nor-folk well know what I’m talking about. The best fish and chips on the Norfolk coast comes from French’s on the seafront. Fact. In case you struggle to identify which chip shop it is, look for the store with the huge queue out the door – at all times of the day.

Maybe it’s because everything tastes so fresh, maybe it’s because the batter is so crispy, or just because of the potato variety, but it is definitely worth waiting in line for. It’s so tasty and more-ish and not too greasy. It was the perfect way to warm up on a bright and breezy spring afternoon- which would explain why there seemed to be such a huge queue this Sunday!

Thankfully the line moved quickly, so we didn’t have to wait for more than 10 minutes to eat – to be honest, it can be torturous to wait, with the scent of fish and chips wafting out the door!

Admittedly there’s not much seating inside the restaurant, but on a nice day you can sit outside on the sea wall, or set up camp in the park around the corner. And then get a 99 from the ice cream shop over the road. Obvs!
