Before I properly begin, let me set the scene for you: although I have champagne tastes, I am unfortunately lumbered with a lager budget. However, as many of you will by now be aware, I have never let that stop me dreaming.
So when Jarrold in Norwich revealed that it was getting a new Tom Ford counter as part of the refurbishment of its make-up department, I was itching to get my mitts on their lipstick. But at a steep £36 a pop, it did seem rather decadent to buy one on a whim.
Thankfully my best friend is a genius and surprised me with a Jarrold gift voucher for my birthday. It literally took all of my strength not to go there and buy something at that very moment.
A beauty bloggers’ dream
First of all, the new beauty area is fabulous. The lighting is much improved, the counters have lots of space around them and some gorgeous brands have been introduced alongside Tom Ford (I will put together a Jo Malone blog soon).
Secondly, the service I received was fantastic. The guy on the counter (apologies, his name has escaped me) was great – allowing me to try on several different colours, wander round with them on, try them on a second time and give me advice on what looks best. The whole process felt really special and although I was parting with lots my hard-earned, it felt thoroughly worthwhile and infinitely more satisfying than the impersonal experience of an off the shelf purchase. And what’s more, I could treat myself to a slice of cake in The Pantry after all that hard work too.
And finally, to the lipstick itself. I went for the True Coral, and although it is rather more vibrant shade than I would normally wear (I tend to stick to darker, blue-toned shades of red), I love it. It’s hydrating and lasts for absolutely hours. I put it on at 8am before I go to work and it’s still there at midday, despite drinking several cups of tea.
