The Retreat Beauty Rooms at Jarrold

Jarrolds, Norwich

Tucked away on the first floor of Norwich’s most iconic department store, these elegant treatment rooms offer a soothing sanctuary right in the city centre – no lengthy journey to an out-of-town spa required.

Recently refurbished, The Retreat Beauty Rooms combine the quiet indulgence of a dedicated spa with the ease of a city-based salon. Everything about the experience has been carefully designed to help guests slow down, switch off and reset, all within walking distance of the Norwich Market.

A beautifully designed space

The moment you arrive, you tell that considerable thought and investment have gone into the space. The interiors are calm and contemporary, decorated in soft whites and neutrals that immediately put you at ease. A bright, welcoming seating area invites you to settle in with a glass of water while you wait for your appointment, surrounded by the soft hum of conversation and the occasional sound of a manicure being finished nearby.

The team at The Retreat Rooms set the tone immediately. They’re friendly, attentive and clearly experienced. Whenever I’ve arrived, I’ve been greeted with warmth and guided to my treatment room.

As you’re led through the space, the atmosphere shifts. The noise fades away and the mood becomes even more tranquil, creating a sense of escape despite being in the middle of a department store.

Treatments at the Retreat Beauty Rooms

The Retreat Rooms at Jarrolds offer an extensive range of treatments, from rejuvenating facials to relaxing massages. Each one uses carefully chosen products and is delivered by therapists who know exactly how to tailor the experience to individual needs. The menu includes Dermalogica and Grown Alchemist facials, aromatherapy body treatments, OPI nail services, waxing, spray tanning and specialist men’s treatments.

One of my favourites is the hot stone massage, a full-body treatment that melts away tension from head to toe. The heated stones glide across tight muscles while the massage bed itself is gently warmed, creating a cocooning sensation that helps the body loosen and the mind unwind. The pressure is perfectly calibrated – firm enough to address knots but never uncomfortable – and the warmth penetrates deep into tired muscles. It’s the kind of treatment that leaves you feeling both soothed and re-energised.

I’ve also experienced several facials, and the Grown Alchemist Defence Facial is a highlight. The treatment follows a luxurious sequence of cleansing, toning and moisturising, enhanced with a head and arm massage that extends the pampering. You can feel the quality of the products as they’re applied, and the therapist’s skilled touch makes you feel genuinely cared for from start to finish.

The private treatment rooms are spotlessly clean and maintain a comfortable temperature throughout. Fresh linens, dimmed lighting, and the subtle scent of essential oils complete the sensory experience.

Also, they’ve got the music just right. Rather than the predictable panpipes, the playlists tend to feature gentle, chilled-out tracks that create a calm but contemporary atmosphere. It’s a small detail, but it makes the experience feel more personal and modern rather than generic.

Location, location, location

For anyone living or working in the area, the location of The Retreat Beauty Rooms is one of its biggest draws. Situated right inside Jarrolds on London Street, it’s exceptionally easy to reach, whether you’re popping in on your lunch break or spending a day in town.

After your treatment, you can step out into the heart of the city, wander through the market, or enjoy a coffee nearby while that post-treatment calm lingers.

For those who want to extend the experience, the rest of Jarrold offers plenty of temptation. You can pair your treatment with lunch at The Exchange restaurant on the third floor, browse the extensive beauty hall where you can pick up your favourite Grown Alchemist or Dermalogica products to continue the glow at home, or explore the homeware and fashion floors before heading home refreshed and restored.

What could be better at The Retreat Spa at Jarrold?

In the interest of balance, booking during peak times (particularly Saturdays and school holidays) can sometimes mean limited availability, so advance booking is recommended if you have specific dates in mind. The popularity of the space is a testament to its quality, but it does mean you need to plan ahead for the most sought-after treatments and time slots.

Also, you can sometimes hear sounds from the department store, though this is rare and the music helps to mask it.

For busy professionals, parents in need of a break, or anyone looking for a touch of calm without the hassle of travelling outside the city, The Retreat Rooms at Jarrold are an excellent choice. The combination of expert therapists, peaceful surroundings, quality products, and a convenient location makes it easy to prioritise self-care.
