Jive, Norwich

Hello, fellow Norfolk lovers! It’s been a while since I’ve taken to the keyboard, but believe me, it’s not for want of trying. However, the whirlwind of work has kept me tightly tethered to my professional commitments. But, there comes a point when culinary adventures beckon, pulling you out of the grind. And that call was answered recently with an irresistible urge to revisit and update my thoughts on a beloved establishment – Jive in Norwich.

This culinary gem, a place that has long held a special place in my heart, called for an updated review. So, join me on this virtual culinary journey as we dive into the vibrant ambience, exquisite dishes, and unexpected delights that compelled me to hit the keys and share the love for Jive once again. It’s time to break the blogging silence! 🌮🍹

The atmosphere at Jive, Norwich

First up, the ambience at Jive remains a standout – the warm lighting and warmer welcome are immediate. We were shown to our table on the second floor where we took in the bright new wall art and music. The majority of the tables were filled, so there was a gentle burble of chatter in the background. And the view along Gentleman’s Walk is fantastic for people-watching.

It still has the stripped-back walls and rough-and-ready finish of my previous review but, rather than seeming unusual, now feels familiar and unpretentious.

The food menu remains pleasingly short but diverse, filling a single side of A4 – but we still struggled to decide what to order!

But let’s get on with the drinks.

I kicked off the evening with a Margarita, which was a work of art. The balance of flavours was impeccable. Bright and zingy with tequila dryness on the finish, I struggled to sip it slowly. And the addition of a ball of ice for the perfect chill was a classy touch. The only negative was that it was served in a beer glass and not a cocktail glass, but it didn’t steal the spotlight from the incredible taste.

Now, onto the star of the show – the birria tacos.

Having fallen for birria on a recent trip to Mexico, I was sceptical about finding a match back home. But if anyone could get it right, it would be Jive. It’s easily the best spot for tacos in Norwich.* With its slow-cooked beef shin served in soft, fried homemade tacos with gooey queso, it was spot on.

Each bite was a burst of rich, tender goodness, and the consommé on the side for dipping (or perhaps a cheeky slurp) takes it to a whole new level. I loved them so much that a return trip later in the week was practically mandatory. I really hope they stay on the menu for a while.

The buttermilk chicken wings at Jive are a menu staple and not to be missed. Tender, moist, and just the right amount of spicy zing, we may have ordered two portions. The Chap is a self-proclaimed fanatic, and would love a vat of it at home.

The unexpected hero of the evening was the side of grilled leeks. It’s not something I’d typically order, but a friend’s recommendation insisted I give them a go. What a revelation! The rich black bean butter, the depth of spices, the crunch from peanuts, and the nutty flavour of sesame combined with crispy onions – what a surprise. I may have cleaned the plate…

In conclusion, Jive, continues to captivate my taste buds and provide an experience that goes beyond just a meal. If you haven’t been yet, I can’t recommend it enough, 🌮🍹

Where next?
