Fawlty Towers in Penrith

Mould and mildew in shower

As you may have spotted, I’ve been away from Norfolk, in Penrith. And the hotel wasn’t great. Or even slightly nice. Unfortunately the hotel I originally picked had double booked me, which meant I had to stay at Edenhall Hotel, just down the road.

My first impressions weren’t great. The lights in the corridor outside my room didn’t work, so there was only a table light, which immediately made me feel wary. Then, when I got into the room, I discovered a dead fly in my bed, and not just a little one either. At least ten dead flies were trapped in the ceiling lights, so they seem to have a problem. When I called reception to ask to move rooms, I was told it wouldn’t be possible, but they would change the sheets. I’m slightly dubious about whether they did, because when I returned to the room after dinner, there was a mark on the duvet cover that had been there earlier.

The shower was also covered with mildew too, which was quite disgusting, considering it could just have been wiped away with a cloth.

And then the remote control for the TV broke, so I could only watch BBC1. By this point I couldn’t really be bothered to discuss the issue, so went straight to bed because I didn’t fancy Holby City.

The next morning, when I tried to order a toasted tea cake, there was only one available, which some one else had ordered. As far as I could tell, there were only two other people staying, so the stock of tea cakes must have been very low indeed. I know it’s only a small thing, but after everything else, it was the perfect end to my stay.

Penrith is beautiful, but I would not recommend staying here. Sorry, it sounds like a massive rant, and I guess it is and might be better suited to TripAdvisor, but I would prefer to warn people!

Hi, I'm Lucy. I've lived in Norfolk since 2001 and in that time I've grown to love this fine county. From the city of Norwich, to the countryside villages and sweeping coastline, there's so much to explore and hope to share my experiences with you here.
