I’ve had a creative itch for a few months now and I’ve wanted to try my hand at something new, but I’ve really struggled to find a suitable outlet.
The problem is, I don’t have any particular skills. I’ve forgotten how to knit, lack the patience for sewing and cannot draw – so when a colleague suggested that we head to Waterstone’s yesterday lunch time for a corsage making workshop, I immediately said yes.
Run by The Make Place on Magdalene Street, it was a taster of the classes they offer in their shop. They want to encourage people to be creative and enjoy making things again, which is no mean feat. With the growth of Etsy and Folksy, it’s easy to see that people have become interested in crafts again, but might not be sure where to start (like me!).
I have to thank Sally, the tutor, for her infinite patience with me – she didn’t mind when things started to go a bit wrong and needed to help me out. I was unsure whether my corsage was going to look even vaguely respectable, but with a little help, I was rather proud of my achievement in the end.
The Make Place holds classes in the week and on Saturdays, teaching everything from knitting to cushion making and sewing machine tutorials at very reasonable prices. If you want to find out about the courses and go along, visit their website for more details.
