Huge portions at Hainford

For what seems to have been years of saying that I would like try the Hainford Chequers, I am pleased to announce I finally visited this weekend. Hurrah!

I remember friends telling me about the food here ages ago, saying that the portions were huge and there was a massive selection, I should really try it. With glowing recommendations like those, how could I refuse?

The Chequers is a quintessentially English cottage in a very small village just outside Norwich, perfect for a Sunday roast in winter, although I can also imagine going back in the sunshine in the summer. Having such imagination means I have an excuse to go back!

Too much choice

Before I go any further though, I have to say that a slight downside was the menu; it was huge and put me off a little bit because I couldn’t decide what to have. Most people wouldn’t have a problem with this, I’m just a bit indecisive! You also have to check the blackboards on the walls, because you don’t get a menu at the table. None of us realised this at first, and sat waiting at the table for ages.

Not only that, but because we went on a Sunday evening, they seemed to have sold out of many of the mains, which was a little disappointing. Evidently, the key is to get there earlier in the day for the full selection.

Epic proportions

Luckily the food came out piping hot though and in epic proportions – I don’t normally struggle to finish a meal, but I didn’t stand a chance with this one. As delicious as it was, I was never going to eat it all!

I had salmon wrapped in filo pastry, and there was so much fish I was stunned! Everyone’s meals were huge though – the mixed grill seemed to have every type of meat imaginable! All the meals come with either potatoes and veg or chips and salad and they’re certainly not stingy with those either – I left most of my chips!

Although it might not be the finest haute cuisine, it’s great value for money and the service is good too.

If you want a nice, homely meal in a relax environment, I definitely recommend The Chequers. In fact, it was perfect for a Sunday dinner.
