Macarons from Wholesome Grocer

Over the past few months I have become increasingly interested in the subject of macarons; I’m fascinated by everything from making them to where I can buy them. And although I am a staunch cupcake lover, I decided to succumb to temptation and go over to the dark side this week.

Thankfully, I had been reliably informed that Wholesome Grocer, located on Swan Lane in Norwich, is a purveyor of such delicacies, so I decided to stop there in my quest for sweetness.

Norfolk treats

Wholesome Grocer is a delightful shop, selling all manner of fine foods and treats sourced from the local area, including Brays Cottage pork pies, pickled samphire, chutneys and cakes. In fact, I had to walk away from the olive counter before I ended up spending all of my wages there and then.

Anyway, back to the macarons; as if to prove that they sell the fine French fancies, there is a tower of them in the window at the minute (seriously) and when I walked into the shop, my eyes were drawn to them in all their pastel glory.

The helpful chap behind the counter gave me a brief run down of the flavours available (rose, salted caramel, chocolate and passionfruit) and then left me to deliberate my choice.

After a few moments of indecision, I settled on the salted caramel and I’m pleased I did; it was honestly like eating a cloud of sugary, nutty deliciousness. The shell had a soft crunch, while in the insides were light and the middle was slightly chewy, while it tasted sweet and savoury at the same time…I think I’m in love!

Treat yourself

Now, before I go any further, they are a little pricey at £1.29 each, but they are so delicious and infinitely better than the cakes you get at Costa. Not only that, but because they are so small, I can kid myself that they are low fat!

Incidentally, the macarons at Wholesome Grocer are made by local celebrity and Masterchef contestant, Dr Tim Kinnaird. It’s worth letting an expert make them than trying to do it yourself (trust me, it’s hard work!)

Directions to Wholesome Grocer
