Yesterday I popped over to City Tacos on Norwich Market for lunch, and I couldn’t resist writing about it. I’ve love Mexican food, and this was something special.

There was no queue when we arrived, and the stallholder greeted us with a big smile. He took our order and happily talked us through the menu, explaining the ingredients and where he sourced them. It made the whole experience feel really personal – more like a chat than just ordering food.
There are currently four taco options on offer, including a mushroom vegetarian option. We went for three different meaty choices.
First up were the birria de res tacos – fried with cheese inside, filled with rich, tender beef and served with a pot of consommé on the side. These were everything I love about birria: messy, cheesy, full of flavour, and perfect for dipping. I’ve missed them ever since Jive closed, so I was thrilled to find them here.

We also tried the carnitas taco, packed with juicy, flavoursome pork and topped with a zesty tomatillo sauce. This one really stood out – tender, balanced and so moreish.
The third choice was the chorizo taco, made with spicy ground chorizo and finished with lime crema and tajín-seasoned potato chips for an extra crunch. It had a good kick without overpowering the taste, with layers of spice that kept things interesting.
Each taco comes topped with coriander, onion and pretty pink pickled onions, adding freshness to every bite. At £3 a taco, the portions are generous, the food comes out quickly, and it’s fantastic value for money.
The only challenge?
Eating tacos in the middle of the market can get a little messy, so I’d recommend grabbing plenty of napkins and finding a seat nearby if you can. But honestly, it’s worth it.
City Tacos has quickly become one of my new favourite spots on Norwich Market. Tasty, good value, and served with a smile – what more could you want?
