The American Dream at Zak’s

Continuing in the foodie vein of the last few posts, today’s blog is all about Zak’s American Diner on Mousehold Heath – mainly because I went there yesterday.

I will confess that I was a little bit apprehensive before I went; I’ve not been there for years and wasn’t sure what to expect. And it didn’t help that when I turned up at 2 in the afternoon it seemed a little lacklustre and tired. However, I think that’s because I’ve only ever been there after dark, when there’s more of an atmosphere.

Thankfully when we got inside the the waiting staff were very attentive – giving us enough time to make a choice, ensuring that we had everything we needed and talking to my 4 year old cousin. Admittedly it was quiet in there, but I got the impression they would have been as good of an evening too.

And so to the food…

As is the law in Zak’s, I had a burger with curly fries (a Meltdown burger, if anyone is interested) and was quite looking forward to it. Unfortunately it was rather average and therefore overpriced for what it was (£9.35) – just a burger, Bacon, Kraft cheese and mushrooms.

Admittedly it was tasty and I didn’t need to eat for the rest of the day, but it wasn’t healthy at all. A bit of salad or coleslaw on the side wouldn’t have gone amiss for that price.

Over all, my verdict is that it’s just OK. It’s not somewhere I’ll hurry back to, but I wouldn’t avoid it either. Definitely better than a McDonald’s.
